So.....the International Student Society here at Aber had an Olympic-themed pub crawl last night. Everyone was to dress as their country's national sport. Naturally, my friends and I chose the lumberjack competitions that come on late night t.v. but are oh-so-entertaining. Log roll, anyone? I think it's based in Wisconsin. Leslie didn't feel well and ended up not going, and Matteo decided to be lame and be a basketball player instead. Turns out the rest of the exchange student population isn't too keen on dressing up. We still had a really fun time, though. Made hatchets out of empty toilet paper rolls and aluminum foil. Also carried the top part of an artificial Christmas tree around with us. Got mistaken as Canadians a few times. After we left the first pub, Scholars (conveniently about a block away from our flat), a foot race was held to determine the 4 team captains. Thankfully, our Matteo can run pretty fast and was a team captain; Bonnie, Jacquelyn, and I all ended up on the same team (let the record show that I was chosen first). The first "event" was to see which team could be the loudest. This really wasn't even fair to the other teams, and we won this without even trying (Americans are supposed to be loud and obnoxious anyways, right?) Also joining our team was a nice German girl from Berlin. Our team name was Team Griz, in reference to the U of Montana's mascot, the grizzly bear, since 2 of our party were from Montana. Oh, and the prizes for winning the events were suckers. They were delicious. After leaving the next pub, whose name I cannot recall but has free hotdogs during halftime of rugby games, we headed to the Academy, a former church turned pub. Weird? Yes. Sacrilegious? I'm undecided. It's very nice, though, and tastefully-done. Clean, very clean (in contrast to T-town bars) and airy as it is an open two stories inside. They kept nice details such as the organ intact. The music wasn't too loud, either-a legit conversation could be had without trouble. But before the Academy, on the streets of Aber, an epic tug-of-war event was held. And yes, Team Griz won another round of suckers. An all-around really fun night, albeit a cold one, with most of the events being held outside. We got to meet a lot of the other international students at Aber.....from Germany, France, even some English gents who just happened to be at one of the pubs. I didn't get many pictures, but I'll post the ones I have now (mainly of tug-of-war) and try to nab a few of my friends' that will properly showcase our mad costuming skills. :)
